Plans for a £200m business energy park would be "a threat to the lifestyle" of local people, campaigners have said.

Proposals for the Yorkshire Energy Park, earmarked for a former aerodrome field near Hull, include a data centre, education campus and power station.

An outline planning application has been submitted to East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

But the Say No To Yorkshire Energy Park group said there were concerns over increased traffic, noise and pollution.

Developers Sewell Group said the scheme, which it believes could create more than 1,000 jobs, had received "positive feedback" during a public consultation.

On its website, the Say No To Yorkshire Energy Park group said: "The loss of half of the green land that is currently there is a threat to the lifestyle of the people of Hedon and to wildlife.

"The proposals pose a great threat to the pollinators, hares, rabbits, voles, bats, deer, birds, and even otters and great crested newts which have been spotted in the Hedon area."

The developer had said it predicted an additional 120 jobs would be created during the eight to 10-year construction period, which is expected to start in early 2018 if the plans are approved.

Several global companies have backed the project including EON, IBM, Vodafone and Chinese telecom giant ZTE.

The project is a joint venture between Sewell, Eco Parks Developments Ltd and renewable energy company Chiltern.

The former aerodrome field is in Preston, near Hull, and owned by the city council.
