Man killed in service station crash near Maidstone

A man was killed and another man was injured when a car overturned and hit a brick wall at a Kent service station.

The driver, aged in his 40s and from Hadlow, was pronounced dead at the scene on the A26 Tonbridge Road at Wateringbury, near Maidstone, just after 1900 BST on Monday.

Kent Police said the BMW left the carriageway, overturned and fractured a gas pipe at the Shell petrol station.

A nearby hotel was evacuated while engineers fixed the pipe.

A male passenger was taken to hospital in Maidstone with minor injuries.

A spokeswoman for Kent Police said: "During the incident a gas pipe was fractured resulting in gas leaking from the pipe.

"As a precautionary measure emergency services closed surrounding roads, put a cordon around the petrol station and evacuated a nearby hotel.

"The gas pipe was made safe around 7.45pm and the hotel reopened."

Officers have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
