An elderly woman who died after her mobility scooter and a van were in collision in Kent has been identified.

Edith Sherwood, 98, from Hythe, was crossing Scanlons Bridge Road in the town at 1020 BST on Friday when the accident happened.

She was taken by air ambulance to a London hospital but later died. Her four children were at her bedside.

Police closed the road for about four hours while collision investigation officers inspected the scene.

Her family said Mrs Sherwood, who had lived in Hythe all her life, had been looking forward to reaching 100 and receiving a message from the Queen.

"She is going to be sadly missed but we have wonderful memories of her," said her son John.

"And we know that she loved us and we loved her."

Pc Stewart Duncan said: "This was a tragic incident and we are appealing for anyone who has any information, or who was at the scene, to contact police."
