A search operation involving a police helicopter was launched after a three-year-old boy went missing from his Sussex home with the family labrador.
The youngster, from High Hurstwood, near Uckfield, was reported missing on Thursday at 1622 BST.
He was eventually spotted by the Sussex Police helicopter more than a mile from his home in Wilding Wood.
The boy and his dog ran away as the helicopter landed but returned to the craft to be checked over by paramedics.
His mother said: "I really can't thank everyone who took part in the search enough.
"From the moment we called to the time he was with the helicopter crew was barely an hour.
"We're very grateful and we'll be making sure that he doesn't repeat his escapade."
Pc Amy Wright said: "We're glad that we found him safe and well and he certainly enjoyed a look round the helicopter while we waited for the ground units to arrive."
