An MP has urged health chiefs not to move some maternity services from one Kent hospital to another.

Helen Grant, the MP for Maidstone and the Weald, told a debate at Westminster Hall the move did not have the backing of GPs or patients.

The changes would see consultants for expectant mothers moved from the Maidstone Hospital to the new Pembury Hospital in Tunbridge Wells from 2011.

Health managers have said the plans are in the best interests of patients.

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust said it would give more choice, with new mothers getting a more personal experience at Maidstone.

If the proposals go ahead, Maidstone would be left with just a midwife-led birthing unit.
