Kent woman and dog rescued from river in Ashford

A Kent woman had to be rescued by firefighters after she slipped down a riverbank and became stuck in mud.

Lynn Hollingberry, from Ashford, was attempting to rescue her dog in Victoria Park when she fell.

Barney, a West Highland Terrier, had become entangled in reeds after also slipping down the riverbank.

Crews from Kent Fire and Rescue Service pulled Ms Hollingberry and her pet to safety shortly after 1000 BST on Wednesday.

She said: "The bank was as tall as me and despite trying to pull myself out using the clumps of grass it was really difficult."

Ashford watch manager Jim Smart advised people to call the fire brigade if their dog got into trouble near water.
