Cyclist, 14, falls off river path in Halling

A schoolboy cyclist was injured when he fell 15ft off a path along the River Medway in Halling on to rocks below.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said the 14-year-old suffered multiple injuries when he veered off the path in Ferry Road at 1400 BST on Saturday.

A major rescue operation was launched involving firefighters, the South East Coast Ambulance Service and the water rescue unit from Larkfield.

Strood watch manager Ian Simpson said the crews were fighting against time.

'Becoming submerged'

He said: "We knew that it was a rising tide and we had about half an hour.

"When we first arrived his head was near the water but he was quickly becoming submerged.

"We had crews in life-jackets and specialist water rescue clothing supporting him while paramedics assessed his condition."

Mr Simpson said the boy was lifted to safety using a stretcher and a ladder at 1510 BST.

He added: "It's fair to say we were all quite relieved and there were smiles all round."
