A 48-year-old man is critically ill in hospital with a serious head injury following an assault in Kent.

Police said he was out with a friend in the Murston area of Sittingbourne when he was attacked on Tuesday night.

They were walking in Church Road when there was a brief altercation between a third man, who punched the victim in the face, causing him to fall to the ground.

CCTV images of two men who may have seen the attack have been released.

Two cars

Police said they were walking separately along Church Road near the Co-op store at about the same time.

Officers say they may have information which could help with their inquiries.

They described the attack on the local man, which happened on the corner of Tonge Road and Church Road just before 2000 GMT, as unprovoked.

Det Insp Emma Banks, of Kent Police, said a small black hatchback and a silver or white saloon car also drove past the Co-op at about the same time, heading towards the Eurolink Industrial Estate.
