About 250 homes have been left without water after a burst water main caused a section of the main road through a Kent village to collapse.

Kent Police said the 12ft (3.6m) hole appeared on the A227 Wrotham Road in Meopham near the village green.

Engineers from Southern Water are currently on site and the road remains closed in both directions.

A Kent Police spokeswoman said officers had evacuated about 12 homes in the area as a precaution.

A spokesman for Southern Water said there was a standpipe supply on the village green and staff were handing out bottles of water at the junction of Cricketers Drive.

A spokesman said the company hoped to restore the supply to all households within the next two to four hours.
