Kent burglar who stole while heavily pregnant is jailed

A 21-year-old woman who carried out a string of burglaries while she was heavily pregnant has been jailed.

Canterbury Crown Court was told Charlotte Binnersley stole jewellery worth thousands of pounds during the break-ins in Herne Bay, Kent, in 2010.

Binnersley, of Herne Street, Herne Bay, pleaded guilty to two charges of burglary and one count of fraud and theft at an earlier hearing.

She was sentenced to 18 months in prison on Friday.

'Challenged by homeowner'

Kent Police said she was arrested after she was caught climbing through the bathroom window of a house in Strode Park Road, Herne Bay on 6 September.

The force said Binnersley told the man she was going into labour and needed help but he did not believe her and called the emergency services.

Binnersley also asked for a number of other offences to be taken into consideration at an earlier court appearance.

Following her sentencing, Det Con Chris Owen, of Kent Police, said: "Charlotte Binnersley has caused great distress to a lot of people in the Herne Bay area.

"Her selfish actions meant that people lost precious items that they will never get back and also the freedom to feel safe and secure in their homes.

"I hope that the sentence gives the victims of her numerous crimes some closure and a sense that justice has been served."
