A man wanted in connection with an attempt to smuggle more than 220lb (100kg) of drugs into the UK through Dover has been arrested in Tenerife.

Dutch national Everardus Wijtvliet, 38, was detained hours after appearing on a list of fugitives wanted by the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca).

Mr Wijtvliet, 38, was named on Monday in a campaign targeting alleged British criminals thought to be in Spain.

The heroin and cocaine was hidden in a lorry driven through Dover in 2009.

The driver was arrested and charged with importing drugs and is awaiting trial at Canterbury Crown Court in Kent.

Crimestoppers said Mr Wijtvliet was wanted in connection with allegations he organised the drugs shipment.

Monday's Operation Captura announcement is the latest in a series first launched in 2006.

In the past, they have led to 38 out of 50 named fugitives returning to the UK to face trial or complete jail terms.
