A gang used a stolen digger to rip a cash machine from the wall of a bank - but fled empty-handed after they were disturbed by police.

Officers were called to Snodland in Kent at about 03:40 GMT after a CCTV control room operator saw the JCB smashing into the wall of Natwest.

As police arrived, the men abandoned the JCB and fled in a saloon car and a dark lorry. There were no arrests.

The digger had been stolen from a nearby building site, Kent Police said.

The attempted theft is being linked with an incident in Ashford on Wednesday when a digger was used to remove the cash machine from the wall of Waitrose supermarket.
