Ashford girl reprimanded for false sex assault claim

A 15-year-old girl has received a formal reprimand from Kent Police after admitting she made up an allegation of sexual assault.

The teenager, from Ashford, claimed she was assaulted by a man she did not know near Cypress Avenue on 29 February.

Following an investigation by Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, the girl was interviewed under caution on suspicion of wasting police time.

A Kent Police spokeswoman said the investigation had now been closed.

"Victims of such crimes are always treated with great discretion and sensitivity," said Det Insp Lee Whitehead.

"Any allegations proved to be false are also treated seriously and dealt with accordingly.

"False allegations undermine genuine victims of sexual assault and divert police resources away from what we should be concentrating on."
