Sevenoaks jewellery shop raid stopped by public

Police have praised members of the public who prevented an armed robbery at a jewellery store in Sevenoaks.

A man was chased and held by passers-by at a playing field near the shop in High Street until officers arrived.

An imitation firearm and jewellery worth about £20,000 were recovered following the robbery, at Michael Whitcombe, just before 17:00 on Monday.

Kent Police arrested a 34-year-old man from the town on suspicion of robbery and possession of an imitation firearm.

Det Ch Insp David Coleman said: "Within minutes of this crime being reported a suspect had been detained and high-value property recovered.

"I would like to thank the public for their assistance."
