A teenager has been charged after a man was seriously injured trying to stop suspected petrol thieves in Kent.

Lekshmanan Asokkumar, 58, was carried half a mile down the A20 London Road from the Texaco garage in West Kingsdown on a car bonnet on Wednesday.

He eventually fell off the car and was taken to King's College Hospital in London with serious injuries.

The 19-year-old man was remanded in custody until 16 August when he will appear at Maidstone Magistrates' Court.

The man, of no fixed address, was arrested in the Chatham area, Kent Police said.

He has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, dangerous driving, theft of fuel and driving with no insurance.

A 16-year-old girl from Chatham has been released on bail until 23 August.

Mr Asokkumar's wife, Judie, said on Friday he was out of critical care and showing signs of response.
