A murder inquiry has begun after the body of a woman was found in a shop basement in Medway.

Kent Police said the body was found at a shop in Luton Road, Chatham, on Saturday afternoon.

Officers said they were working to establish the identity of the woman but it was too early to say whether it was that of 69-year-old Harjit Chaggar who was reported missing this month.

Police said four men have been arrested in connection with the incident.

'Early stages'

They are currently in police custody.

Ch Supt Steve Corbishley said: "Our investigation is in the very early stages and I would like to reassure the community not to be alarmed by the extra police activity in the Luton area today."

He said officers had a number of leads to follow up and they wanted to hear from anyone who had any information.

The body was found in the Sani Globe food shop, he added.

Family appeal

Ms Chaggar was last seen leaving a doctor's surgery in Magpie Hall Road in Chatham on 2 September.

On Friday, Det Ch Insp John Coull said concerns were growing for her welfare.

Ms Chaggar had not been in good health and her disappearance was out of character, police said.

The family of the Chatham pensioner also broadcast an emotional appeal for help in finding her.
