Fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, who has dressed Jackie Onassis and Elizabeth Taylor, has been made a Dame.

The 74-year-old, who is chancellor at the University for the Creative Arts, which has campuses in Kent and Surrey, received a CBE in 1997.

She said she was "honoured" to be recognised by her country, and described her new medal as "beautiful".

She was made a Dame by the Princess Royal at a ceremony in Buckingham Palace.

Dame Zandra said: "I was thrilled to know it was the Princess Royal. She is very loyal, and very observant about fashion so knows what is going on."

During her career Dame Zandra also designed dresses for Diana, Princess of Wales.
