Protesters have clashed outside the venue for UKIP's spring conference in Kent.

Minor skirmishes broke out involving anti-UKIP protesters, who had marched along Margate seafront, and others who were there to oppose the march.

Police estimated 250 people were on the march, organised by Thanet Stand Up To UKIP.

Anti-UKIP protesters outnumbered about 50 party supporters, some of whom carried the union jack.

Common assault

There were several scuffles outside the Winter Gardens as the two sides confronted each other.

One woman was arrested on suspicion of common assault.

A Kent Police spokeswoman said all protest groups were co-operating with police.

"There have been some very minor verbal exchanges," she said.

"No-one has been injured and the protest has generally been conducted peacefully.

"Officers remain in the local area to reassure the public and to respond to any incidents if required."

The two-day UKIP conference ended about 13:00 GMT.
