The bodies of an adult and a child have been found at a flat in Kent.

Emergency services were called to the property in Trafalgar Street, Gillingham, on Monday evening after concerns were raised by residents.

Police said officers and ambulance service paramedics went to the scene but the two people were found dead.

A spokesman said the deaths were being treated as unexplained and the investigation was a "particularly sensitive matter".

It is believed the flat was let to people with support needs.

Officers have been at the scene throughout the day and will remain there for at least the next 24 hours while investigations continue to establish the cause of death.

Post-mortem examinations will be carried out later this week.

Steve Hedges, who lives nearby but said he did not know the people who lived in the flat, said he saw five police vehicles, a forensics van, an ambulance and an emergency paramedic at the scene.

Adding that he had lived in Gillingham all his life, he said: "It's extremely shocking and worrying."
