Singer Alesha Dixon will perform at the launch of this year's Blackpool Illuminations, it has been announced.

The Strictly Come Dancing star is set to appear as part of a weekend of live concerts before and after the switch-on on Friday 3 September.

Comedian Alan Carr turned the lights on last year, but this year's full line-up has yet to be announced.

The famous lights, which have been a tradition in the resort since 1912, stretch six miles along the seafront.

The modern display of illuminations was first organised that year when 10,000 bulbs were arranged to mark the visit by Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria.

Councillor Maxine Callow, cabinet member for tourism and regeneration, said: "I'm delighted that we are able to give a sneak peek at the quality of the line-up for our Big Switch-On Weekend and very much looking forward to seeing Alesha perform.

"We're really excited as we prepare to announce our Switch-On star to the nation, and look forward to seeing the full celebrity line-up to launch this year's world-famous Blackpool Illuminations."

Dixon, a former member of girl group Mis-teeq, won the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing in 2007 and went on to become a judge on the show last year.
