A teenage driver has been killed and two off-duty police officers injured in a car crash in east Lancashire.

Matthew Alston, 18, was driving a Vauxhall Corsa along Whalley Road, Read, when it collided with a Seat Toledo at 0715 BST.

Two Lancashire police motorway officers were travelling in the Toledo. They had just finished a night shift.

A 38-year-old female officer, who was driving, suffered leg injuries. Her male colleague, 49, was slightly hurt.

The teenager, who police said was from Read, died at the scene.

Witness appeal

The female officer remains in a stable condition at the Royal Blackburn Hospital, a police spokeswoman said.

Sgt Pete Sculpher, from the Road Policing Unit, said: "This is a serious incident which has left one driver dead and another in a serious condition in hospital.

"We are trying to piece together a picture of exactly what has happened and I would urge any witnesses to come forward.

"If you were in the area at the time and have any information that could help us with our investigation please contact police."

The road was closed until 1215 BST for accident investigation work.
