An Accrington Stanley fan has been charged with throwing a missile on the pitch during Wednesday's Carling Cup second-round match against Newcastle.

Scuffles broke out between fans and police as officers tried to arrest the alleged missile thrower outside the Crown Ground, Lancashire police said.

Some Newcastle United fans ran on to the pitch immediately after the game, which the Magpies won 3-2.

A total of eight fans were arrested, including three Newcastle supporters.

A second Accrington fan was charged with assaulting a police officer, being drunk and disorderly and resisting arrest.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: "The match had been a wonderful occasion, with the majority of fans in really good spirits, which became marred by a small group of people becoming hostile towards the police following the arrest of a man for an earlier incident."

The men facing charges are due to appear before Hyndburn magistrates on 8 September.
