Procession to mark 125 years of Blackpool trams

Classic trams will trundle through Blackpool later to celebrate 125 years of the resort's tram service.

Blackpool Tramway was officially opened on 29 September 1885. It was the UK's first electric tram service and operated 10 trams around the town.

The service now carries about seven million passengers every year on 73 trams in summer and eight in winter.

Seven trams, dating back to 1898, will leave the Pleasure Beach at 1400 BST and make a return trip to Bispham.

A tram which started service in 1898, for the Blackpool and Fleetwood Tramroad Company, is due to lead the procession. It is now owned by the Tramway Museum Society.

The procession marks the end of a week of celebrations which has also included tram tours and an open day at the depot.

Sixteen new trams are due to come into operation in Blackpool by 2012, as part of a multi-million pound upgrade of the network.
