Man charged over Lancashire canal sex attacks

A 37-year-old man has been charged with rape and attempted rape after two young women were attacked as they walked by a canal in Lancashire.

A woman, 23, was raped as she walked home along the canal bank, off Colne Road in Burnley, between 2230 and 2330 BST on 28 September.

A man also tried to rape an 18-year-old woman in the same location at about 2200 BST on 27 August, police said.

Nizam Ahmed, of no fixed abode, is charged with rape and attempted rape.

He is due to appear before Burnley magistrates later.

Det Supt Neil Esseen, of Lancashire Police, said: "Although we have charged a man, this is not the end of the investigation.

"We continue to make inquiries into these and any other similar crimes, and I would urge anyone with any information about any offences in the area to come forward and contact us."
