Liverpool sham bride's sentenced overturned
A pregnant Czech woman who was jailed for taking part in a sham marriage has had her sentence overturned.
Monika Slepcikova, 23, of Liverpool, admitted assisting unlawful immigration and was jailed for eight months at Preston Crown Court in September.
The hearing was told she married Uchenna Peter Ezimorah, 36, a Nigerian living in Manchester, in a church service in Accrington last June.
Judges at the Court of Appeal suspended her sentence for 12 months.
She was also told to carry out 40 hours of unpaid work.
The couple were arrested after it emerged Slepcikova, of Wavertree, was paid £2,000 to go through with the ceremony.
Her lawyers argued she should be freed before the expected November delivery date of her second child.
Ezimorah is serving a 21-month sentence after admitting perjury and obtaining leave to remain by deception.
