A chapel next to a historic religious shrine in Lancashire was damaged by smoke and heat when a fire broke out in a shop below.

Fire crews attended the chapel built next to the 11th Century Ladyewell Shrine on Fernyhalgh Lane, Haighton, Preston at 0822 GMT

Flames, smoke and heat spread from the fire that is believed to have begun in the shop.

Religious artefacts and sacraments were rescued unharmed from the blaze.

An investigation is under way but the fire service said the cause was not thought to be arson.
