Arrest over Blackburn car death pensioner

A great-grandmother has died after she was hit by a car in Blackburn.

Maria Parkinson, 79, was hit by the Volkswagen Golf in Spring Lane just before 15:00 BST on Wednesday. She was taken to hospital but died later.

A 24-year-old man from Blackburn has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and dangerous driving.

Her husband of 56 years, James Parkinson, said she was "loved by all".

In a statement, the family described her as a "devoted wife, wonderful sister and loving mother" and said she would be "sorely missed by her grandchildren and great grandchildren".

The statement read: "She was a very popular lady who loved life and enjoyed her holidays. She was always willing to help anyone and nothing was too much trouble."

Lancashire Police has started an investigation and is appealing for witnesses to come forward.
