A man is in a serious condition after he was stabbed by a group of about five men as he sat in his car in Accrington.

Police said the man, 26, was attacked on Brown Street at about 17:45 BST on Tuesday. He received "a number of stab wounds to the right side of his body".

The men left the scene in a blue Vauxhall Vectra. Officers believe they disposed of the weapons in the canal on Whalley Road, Clayton-le-Moors.

The victim is in a serious but stable condition at Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Det Insp Mark Vaughton said some weapons had since been recovered from the canal.

He said: "This was a vicious assault, but we do believe the victim may have known his attackers. We do not think this was a random attack.

"I am keen to speak with anyone who may have seen a group of men acting suspiciously near to the canal behind The Albion pub".
