A blaze has ripped through a primary school in Manchester, destroying the roof of the assembly hall.

The fire at Northenden Community School on Bazley Road was noticed at about 21:00 GMT on Friday.

Head teacher Ian Beard said the fire destroyed the roof of the school's assembly hall, but classrooms and office areas were unaffected.

The school confirmed it will be closed on Monday and possibly for the rest of the week subject to safety checks.

Mr Beard said: "Whilst this is a critical incident which will clearly affect the school for some time, we need to be thankful that no-one was injured, that we have not lost more of our school building."

Greater Manchester Police said there was no evidence the fire was deliberately started.
