Hundreds of Fylde homes remain without gas

Hundreds of residents are still without heating and hot water after a gas pipe was damaged in Lancashire.

About 950 homes were left without gas in Great Eccleston, Little Eccleston and Elswick after a main gas supply was damaged during roadworks on Thursday.

National Grid said a team of 60 engineers had restored the supply to 250 properties in Elswick.

It said it was "hopeful" it could restore all homes this evening.

'Poor communication'

The firm had earlier warned it could be Sunday before supplies were reconnected.

Kevin Roberts, of Little Eccleston, said communication had been "very poor".

Mr Roberts said: "I stayed up until midnight last night for engineers and have been waiting for them since 08:00 this morning.

"I called the helpline and they have no idea when they will be able to come or if it is today or tomorrow."

Mr Roberts said the gas cut had particularly affected his 88-year-old father-in-law Edsel Yarwood, who lives with him.

"He really feels the cold and has had to sit on top of a fan heater to try and get warm."
