Lorry driver killed in M61 crash in Lancashire

A lorry driver has been killed in a crash on the M61 in Lancashire, closing the motorway northbound.

Police were called at about 03:10 BST after his lorry left the carriageway about a mile north of Rivington services and hit wooden fencing.

The driver, found by passing workmen, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorway was closed between Horwich and Chorley for several hours but reopened at about 09:00. One lane remains closed for recovery work.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash.
