Fraud probe West Yorkshire Police sergeant found dead

A West Yorkshire Police officer who was arrested over fraud allegations has been found dead.

Sgt Simon Jenkinson, 31, was found at his home in the Meanwood area of Leeds on Thursday.

He was arrested on Monday and later released on bail. Sgt Jenkinson was being investigated by the force's professional standards division.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said Sgt Jenkinson's death was not being treated as suspicious.

Sgt Jenkinson served with the north-west Leeds division of West Yorkshire Police.

Staff support

The spokeswoman added: "We were called to an address in the Meanwood area of Leeds at 1315 BST yesterday, where a 31-year-old man was found dead. His death is not being treated as suspicious."

The spokeswoman said Sgt Jenkinson had been suspended from duty while investigations were carried out.

Police said a 23-year-old woman had also been arrested and bailed in connection with fraud allegations.

Ch Supt Ian Whitehouse, divisional commander of the north-west Leeds Division, said: "Any sudden death is tragic but particularly when it is one of our officers.

"I extend our sympathies to Simon's family, friends and work colleagues. I have spoken personally to officers who I know worked closely with Simon and we are offering support to any staff affected by his death."
