Drivers' licence plates secured in police scheme

Drivers can get their number plates secured free in a police scheme to combat vehicle crime and fraud.

Officers will be in Wharfedale and Craven over several days to replace licence plate screws with ones which are harder to remove.

West Yorkshire Police said registration plates stolen from cars and fitted to vehicles used in illegal activity meant it was harder to track the criminals.

The service is being offered from 17 May to 9 June.

Officers will be at Tesco in Ilkley between 1400 and 1500 BST on 17 May.

They will also be available on 25 May between 1900 and 2000 BST at Burley Cricket Club in Wharfedale and at Kirklands Community Centre in Menston between 1330 and 1430 BST on 9 June.

Police Community Support Officer Lawrence Walton said: "Changing the screws in number plates is a very quick and simple task which can really prove effective in preventing thieves from stealing number plates."
