A 55-year-old woman is seriously ill in hospital after being stabbed during an attack in east Leeds in which her daughter was also injured.

West Yorkshire Police said the women were attacked near a property in Bar Lane in the Garforth area of the city.

Officers have sealed off a number of areas in the Garforth district and are making inquiries to trace a male suspect.

The 25-year-old female's injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

A police spokesman said officers were called to the street just before 08:00 BST following reports of a "domestic stabbing".

He said: "When they arrived they found two women.

"Both had suffered multiple stab wounds.

"A 55 and a 25-year-old woman were taken to Leeds General Infirmary."
