Ideas wanted for Watermead park bench characters

Suggestions are being sought for Leicestershire characters which could help create a landmark bench in a park.

Watermead country park is undergoing £1.4m of improvements to paths, access and bridges for walkers and cyclists.

As part of this a portrait bench is being installed, which includes life-size steel images of people.

The county council has asked for ideas from the public as to who should be used - which can include celebrities, residents or even fictional characters.

The Watermead project is backed by Sustrans Connect2, a lottery funded sustainable transport organisation, which won £50m in a public vote.

Lesley Pendleton, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "It is fitting that people voted for Connect2 to receive the Big Lottery money, and now people will get the chance to choose who is immortalised on the commemorative portrait bench.

"Connect2 is an exciting project - we have already improved access for many residents and more is yet to come."
