Woman dies when car hits tree in Oakthorpe

A woman was killed when the car she was travelling in hit a tree in Leicestershire.

The accident happened in Oakthorpe at around 0620 BST on Sunday on the A42, near to junction 11 of the M42.

The driver and a second passenger in the black Volvo S40 Sport were not injured in the accident, police said.

A 26-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the incident and released on bail. Police have appealed for witnesses.

The woman who died was pronounced dead at the scene. She has yet to be formally identified.

Det Con Patricia Draycott, the investigating officer, said: "The collision happened when the Volvo was in collision with a tree.

"We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the Volvo in the area prior to the collision, to contact us."
