About 60,000 chickens have been killed in a fire at a Leicestershire farm.

Crews were called to the business on Desford Lane in Kirby Muxloe late on Saturday night.

They found a large barn well alight. At its height the flames were tackled by six engines, but crews were unable to prevent the building from collapsing.

Damping down continued throughout the night and specialist fire investigation officers are at the scene trying to establish a cause.

Crew manager Richard Craston said: "These are substantial buildings with wooden walls and metal roofs and these have collapsed, leaving a lot of twisted metal.

"Because of the dangerous nature of the remaining structure, and the remains of livestock carpeting the floor, crews have not yet entered the affected barn."
