Warning over former Leicestershire MP e-mail scam

People in Leicestershire are being warned about an e-mail scam which claims to be from former Leicester West MP Patricia Hewitt.

The message offers recipients a share of £6m in exchange for bank details.

Both Ms Hewitt and Leicestershire Trading Standards have advised that the e-mail is fake and consumers should ignore it.

The email has actually been sent from an address in Hong Kong, trading standards officials said.

'Delete it'

Anyone who receives the message is advised to delete it immediately and not attempt to open it or reply.

Keith Regan of Leicestershire Trading Standards said the e-mail claims to have £6m set aside for charity which recipients can share if they supply their bank details.

"Quite simply it is a fake and anyone who receives it should delete it immediately," he said.

He said the scams often used the name of a politician or a celebrity to lend credibility.
