Council appeals for Charnwood flood wardens

Residents in a Leicestershire borough are being urged to become flood wardens to help their community in an emergency.

Charnwood Borough Council said it wanted to recruit extra wardens in the area as it had a high risk of flooding.

Large parts of Loughborough were particularly at risk, the council said.

Wardens are needed to pass on flood warnings when issued and help vulnerable people during and after incidents.

Currently there are just 22 wardens in the whole of the borough.

Councillor Jenny Bokor, Charnwood Borough Council's cabinet member for emergency planning, said: "Flood wardens epitomise community spirit by helping their entire neighbourhoods during a deluge.

"Not only do they play a crucial role in warning their neighbourhoods, they are also there to lend a helping hand to the vulnerable."
