Policeman injured in HGV collision in Melton

A policeman is in hospital with a serious hand injury after being struck by a passing lorry in Melton.

The officer was returning to his vehicle after completing a vehicle check when he was hit by a blue and red Volvo HGV.

The incident happened at about 1715 BST on Tuesday on Leicester Street at its junction with Church Street.

A 39-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and bailed pending further inquiries.

Appealing for witnesses, Det Sgt Mark Partridge said: "The police officer involved in the collision has undergone surgery and will need further medical treatment, we are supporting him and his family through this difficult time."

The officer is currently recovering at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham.
