Advice helpline in Leicester hit by funding problems
An independent advice bureau in Leicester is struggling to meet demand because of funding problems, it says.
The Leicester Citizens Advice Bureau now offers its helpline service on two days a week instead of four.
Ros Birch, recruitment manager, said it was also difficult to find volunteers because many were leaving to find paid jobs.
The service provides 2,500 people with financial or consumer advice annually.
Ms Birch said: "We have a lack of volunteers and yet we have an increasing need from clients.
"Because we have low resources in terms of funding and other resources the pressure is really on us."
Centre manager Maggie Price said the service, which is not funded directly by the local authority, survives on small donations from charities.
She said the centre has five part-time paid staff and pays a small amount for expenses to its volunteers.
"We need to find lots of different funds to keep us going. The problem is that we don't have any core funding.
"We have a very good service but it is only available to a small number of people."
