Frozen water warning for by Leicestershire fire service

People in Leicestershire are being warned to stay away from areas of frozen water by the county's fire and rescue service.

Crews were called to eight incidents last winter in which people or their dogs got into trouble in icy conditions.

In January two men died at Watermead Park after falling into icy water.

Fire service spokesman Chris Bilby stressed winter weather conditions posed a serious risk.

He said: "Increasingly, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service are being called to rescue people from the frozen water after they have ventured in to save their dogs, or, in a misguided belief, have been playing on the ice believing it is thick enough to bear their weight."
