Hoax 999 caller apologises to Leicestershire police

Police in Leicestershire have warned of the dangers of making hoax 999 calls after a 13-year-old boy apologised to staff for his actions.

On 14 February, headquarters had more than 60 calls from three children threatening staff and their relatives.

They were traced to the Hinckley area and while two children were reprimanded, one apologised in person.

Officers said as well as the distress caused, hoax calls slowed down reaction times to real emergencies.
