Man and woman attacked on Leicester canal towpath

A 20-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman received minor injuries after being attacked by a group of about six men on a canal towpath in Leicester.

The group assaulted them at about 1600 BST on Wednesday before making off with two mobile phones and a wallet.

The woman was pushed in the back, making her fall into the canal, and the man was kicked and punched to the ground.

Det Con Damian Young said both people were left extremely distressed.

He said: "The victims were extremely upset and shaken by the ordeal and I would like to appeal to the public for their help in finding those responsible.

"There will be increased patrols in the area following the robbery and officers will get the chance to speak to regular walkers from the canal towpath but we would like to encourage other witnesses to come forward."

The suspects have been described as wearing dark hooded tops and bandanas across their faces.
