A surge in burglaries in part of Leicestershire has prompted a warning from police.
Since the start of April, 24 burglaries have been reported in the Nottingham Road area of Melton Mowbray compared to nine during the same period in 2010.
Extra patrols are being organised and leaflets with security advice are being posted to houses.
Officers said that while burglary numbers had fallen long term, residents should be vigilant at the moment.
Insp John Gray said: "In the vast majority of cases people have left their homes insecure with windows and doors left unlocked or open.
"This is obviously very tempting to a burglar and we're appealing to people to help us by securing their property even if they leave the room or go into the garden."
