The appearance of more than 20 bras on bushes at a city roundabout prompted speculation about who is responsible.

The bras appeared at some point this week on Carholme Road roundabout in Lincoln, prompting discussions on social media.

Police chief inspector Phil Vickers tweeted: "I thought about taking them down, but can you imagine what they'd say as I returned to HQ?"

Some suggested it could be a charity campaign, or the work of students.

Ch Insp Vickers added the "bras were not to blame" for seven drivers stopped on Carholme Road for seatbelt offences as part of a crackdown by officers.

Posts on Radio Lincolnshire's Facebook page included one from Mark Addison, of Lincolnshire County Council.

"No, we ordered a bus lane!," he wrote.

Another person said it was a copycat version of a stunt in New Zealand, where a bra fence mysteriously appeared.

Last month, more than 500 protesters tied a chain of bras across the entrance of a town hall in the Spanish city of Valladolid.

The idea began on Twitter, and was part of an anti-rape campaign.
