A central London Tube station was evacuated during Friday morning's rush hour following a small fire in an air conditioning unit.

A Transport For London (TfL) spokesman said: "A station worker noticed smoke coming from a defective air condition unit."

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said it was called to the central London Underground station at about 0730 BST.

The station was closed at 0738 BST and reopened at 0800 BST.

A LFB spokeswoman said: "There was a small fire in a wall-mounted air conditioning unit. A small amount of wiring was damaged."

She said an investigation into the cause of the fire was under way.

British Transport Police (BTP) said it was made aware of the incident at 0740 BST, but did not attend the scene.

LFB sent three fire engines to the station.
