School 'not to blame' for girl falling down staircase

A school in east London was not to blame when a pupil fell down a stairwell and was seriously hurt, the Health and Safety Executive has said.

Raine's Foundation School in Bethnal Green had "no case to answer" in terms of any wrongdoing, it added.

The girl, who is thought to be 11, plunged two floors down a spiral staircase on Wednesday and is in a serious condition in hospital.

Police said they were not treating the matter as suspicious.

"As with any incident which results in a serious injury, the Health and Safety Executive were involved and immediately carried out a site visit," said a spokeswoman for the borough.

"They were satisfied that there was no case to answer.

"Our main priority now is to provide support to the students and staff and our thoughts are with the pupil and her parents at this time."
