A Premier League footballer has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.

West Ham United's Manuel da Costa was held by police investigating an incident in a nightclub in Ilford, east London, on Sunday.

The 24-year-old Portuguese defender was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of sexual assault and common assault.

He was bailed to return to the police station in early December pending further inquiries.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said allegations had been made by a woman in her early 20s at an east London police station.

He added that a 24-year-old man attended an east London police station by appointment, where he was arrested.
