A 91-year-old blind man from west London has had hundreds of pounds he was going to spend on Christmas presents stolen.

The victim, who lives in sheltered accommodation in Paddington, was targeted by a distraction burglar who said he had shopping to deliver.

He allowed the man in for 10 minutes but later that day realised that £600 cash was missing.

The suspect had a foreign accent, is thought to be a smoker and wore gloves.

Police believe he worked with an accomplice who stole the money while the blind man was distracted with conversation.

The victim is said to be "extremely upset" by the crime.

Det Con Steve Nicholls said: "This burglary has been carried out by opportunistic thieves who took advantage of an elderly gentleman who they believed to be vulnerable.

"I also want to take this opportunity to remind anyone answering their front door to do so with caution if it is a caller they are not expecting."
